A groundbreaking collaboration has been announced between OBI Sports and IBV Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV), marking an important step forward in the science and technology of football pitch testing.

The partnership brings together OBI Sports’ cutting‑edge surface‑performance measurement systems with IBV’s internationally recognised expertise in biomechanics, sports‑surface evaluation, and applied research.

The partnership enables the delivery of advanced FIFA Quality testing for both natural and artificial football pitches. By combining OBI Sports’ established surface performance systems with IBV’s FIFA accreditation and scientific validation, the collaboration strengthens access to fully compliant, internationally recognised testing standards. The result is a more robust and credible pathway for elite clubs, governing bodies and infrastructure projects seeking independent, performance-led surface assessment.

Dale Frith, OBI Sports Agronomy Director, who leads up pitch testing said: “We are delighted with this collaboration which will see OBI Sports certified under IBV’s FIFA Accreditation. It will allow us to complete the full range of required tests, which we very much look forward to. This will be an excellent addition to our current pitch testing offering.”

Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Head of Innovation in Sports at IBV, explained: “At IBV, as a FIFA Research Institute, we strongly believe that innovation in pitch testing is essential for the future of the game. Partnering with OBI Sports, with their outstanding expertise in natural grass surfaces, enables us to transfer this knowledge to clubs in Spain and to further internationalise our work and services worldwide.”

The collaboration focuses on combining OBI Sports’ existing staff, methods and equipment with IBV’s accreditations. This integrated approach ensures that the methods used in the field are both scientifically validated and practically applicable to modern football environments.

By combining accredited scientific validation with proven field measurement systems, OBI Sports and IBV are advancing the standard of pitch performance analysis. The partnership is focused on delivering the most reliable and informative surface performance data available today, equipping clubs, governing bodies and the wider football community with the clarity needed to make confident, performance-led decisions that enhance safety, consistency and long-term infrastructure standards.
